Interview with Dominique

Dominique is 33 years of Age, British born mother of four children between the ages of 17-3. Am very passionate about food and hair (Foodie).

What Age did you have your first child ?

I was 16 years old when I had my first child.

When I became a mother because of my age I had fears on weather I was going to be a good mother and role model to my child. It’s hard when you have your first child never mind when your so young, people were judgemental as I was a young mother, questioning if I was capable I was then and still am now.

Are you a single parent? How do you find a balance with all you do?

Yes am a single parent, it isn’t easy getting everything done and find the right balance but I make it work.

It’s my job to discipline, get homework done, make dinner etc. As a mum i take each day as it comes.

The past 20 months or so as been better as my life is settle more up days than down ones.

Trust the process

Do you have a style of parenting ? If so can you elaborate?

I wouldn’t say I have a parenting style as there ain’t no guide to parenting.

You just find a balance and what works for you.

There ain’t no two child that the same so what works for one might not work for the other.

So different strategies for different situations, Patience and flexibility is needed as a mother.

What are your thought on the nature vs nurture subject?

Nature and nurture are both important, not just in parenting but in life in general.

We must be mindful of what is allowed and introduced to our surroundings and our families. What we Saying is as important as doing it nature needs to needs to be nurtured in order for life to exist.

Are you working ? If so how do you balance work with family?

Am studying at the moment, it can be tricky at times. I wake up at 6-6.30am before my children wake up. Time keeping is vital to ensure smooth sailing.

I prepare all we need the night before we dine how always still get in a pickle for socks (just our thing).

If my children have a hot breakfast which they notify me of the night before they wake a bit early, something quick like cereal they get to lay in a bit later.

Just do what works for us with our routine.

Enjoying life is apart of living.

Is there any advice you can share with a struggling parent?

There is nothing wrong with wanting a break. Everyone moms, dads we all deserve and should have time for us.

Now am not saying neglect your responsibilities or abuse time out you need a balance, your break can be 5mins maybe you plan a day out with family and friends.

Totally up to you but your allowed.

Do you take time out for yourself?

embrace the time I get for myself, sometimes I spend it cooking, experiencing new cuisine and flavours.

I don’t always meet with friends as I think sometimes we all need to have peace of mind and time just by ourselves for clarity and think what my next steps are.

I love seeing my friends also I love being with just ME.

Share One value ?

Bad happens!

However everyday is a chance to make things right, thinking of all I have been through and how far I’ve come, my children are still with me happy healthy while I can still take care and provide for them, gives determination to continue to strive for more.

There are lots of advice available for first time parents. As a mother can you give one please?

Become a mom or dad for the first time it will be scary, challenging and fun.

Do not be afraid to ask help and support when you need it!

What are your view on mistakes?

When I make mistakes, admitting it to myself is the first step taken.

Given whom ever the space that I would have made the mistake towards and wait for them to be ready to speak to me and forgive me almost importantly I learn from my mistakes.
